Weiberlahl & Liburd: Epizootic of A. vaccinii Caused by H. thompsonii 601 EPIZOOTIC OF ACALITUS VACCINII (ACARI: ERIOPHYIDEA) CAUSED BY HIRSUTELLA THOMPSONII ON SOUTHERN HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRY IN NORTH-CENTRAL FLORIDA

چکیده
The blueberry bud mite (BBM), Acalitus vaccinii (Keifer) , is gaining importance as a pest of southern highbush blueberries. During a BBM population development study in a northcentral Florida location, an epizootic was observed, and the mesothermic acarine mycopathogen, Hirsutella thompsonii (Fisher), was identified as the causal organism. In order to better understand the progression of an epizootic resulting from H. thompsonii , the area was extensively sampled from Mar 2007 until Apr 2008. Terminal buds of the following developmental stages were collected, as follows: (1) tightly closed buds, (2) symptomatically swollen and reddened buds, and (3) separating or opened buds. A red food coloring staining technique commonly used to stain phyto-parasitic nematodes in or on roots was used to improve the visibility of the microscopic mite. Within 1 year, the population declined from 50% of the flower buds infected (up to 2,000 BBM per bud) to less than 5% of the flower buds infected (about 20 BBM per bud). During the summer, fall, and winter months, the preferred flower buds are scarce, causing low numbers of BBM to colonize less favorable leaf buds. At this time, infection by H. thompsonii remained above 50%. In months with average temperatures below 25°C (Dec through Mar), the frequency of the disease was reduced to 50% and less, allowing the BBM population to recover slightly.

Genetic diversity of Hirsutella thompsonii isolates from Thailand based on AFLP analysis and partial -tubulin gene sequences
Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to investigate polymorphism among 43 Hirsutella thompsonii isolates (33 from Thailand) obtained from various mite species. The outgroups were an unidentified Hirsutella isolate along with Hirsutella nodulosa and Hirsutella kirchneri. Phylogenetic analyses of the AFLP data showed significant variation among isolates and the existence of thre...

The factors explaining host-associated differentiation (HAD) have not yet been fully characterized, especially in agricultural systems. It is thought that certain characteristics within a system may increase the probability for HAD to occur. These characteristics include relatively long-standing evolutionary relationships between insects and their host plants, endophagy, and allochrony in host-...

Hirsutella thompsonii # 966 was cultured and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was then eluted on Sephadex LH-20 column with methanol and the eluted chemical components were analyzed on a Bruker DRX 400 NMR spectrophotometer. The analysis showed several components such as glycerol, ergosterol and diketopiperazine. This was the first time that diketopiperazine had been isolat...
متن کاملRhodes and Liburd: Thrips dispersal from alternate hosts 311 FLOWER THRIPS (THYSANOPTERA: THRIPIDAE) DISPERSAL FROM ALTERNATE HOSTS INTO SOUTHERN HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRY (ERICALES: ERICACEAE) PLANTINGS
Frankliniella bispinosa (Morgan) is the key pest of southern highbush blueberries ( Vaccinium corymbosum L. × V. darrowi Camp) in Florida. Thrips feeding and oviposition injury to developing flowers can result in fruit scarring that renders the fruit unmarketable. Previous studies have shown that flower thrips can disperse into cultivated crops from surrounding host plants. Therefore, the objec...
